Although reform efforts have been made, it is necessary to strengthen democracy at the grassroots level.
In Ghana, democracy has been successful due to robust institutions, a democratic political culture, and an active civil society. The 1992 Constitution and widespread support for democracy have been fundamental. Leaders accept the rotation of power peacefully, and civil society and the media educate the population about democracy.
The conference ‘Democracy and Politics: Reimagining a Global Democratic Future’ underscored the need for new democratic visions to strengthen resilience and address current challenges. Solutions were discussed, the role of parties, interaction between institutions and citizenship, global strategies, and the impact of technology, highlighting collaboration between actors to counter authoritarian risks.
The democratic weakening affected companies, generating uncertainty and reducing investment in essential data. Authoritarian decisions by the Trump administration, such as cuts in science and trade tariffs, influenced long-term planning and hiring of professionals. Hostility towards immigrants and cuts in education damaged key industries such as biotechnology and technology. The decline in tourism and interference in media also caused economic damage.
Political violence in the United States, including murders and threats, poses a growing threat to democracy and security. It is crucial that leaders condemn these acts and take action without restricting civil liberties. Various attacks on political representatives reflect a tense and dangerous climate. It is essential to implement short- and long-term strategies to prevent and mitigate violence, involving government actors and civil society. Unity and joint condemnation are fundamental to preserving democracy.
