Democratization in Africa shows advances and setbacks, including 13 attempted military coups since 2020 and a democratic rollback to the year 2000. Vertical, horizontal, and diagonal accountability is key to democratic resilience, and five cases are studied to analyze the different trajectories and factors influencing democracy.
