New Federal Actions Pose Risks for English Learner Students
English language learner (EL) policies in K-12 are at risk following recent federal actions. Trump declared English as the official language, the U.S. Department of Education withheld funds and eliminated a legal guidance letter for EL accommodations. Trump’s proposed budget would eliminate Title III funds entirely. This puts approximately 5 million EL students in U.S. public schools at risk, whose situation and access to funds are compromised, affecting their academic performance and schools’ ability to support them adequately.
