IMPORTANT:
Israel continues to enjoy a state of impunity, acting with impunity in international conflicts and violating fundamental norms of international law. Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip have set the streets ablaze during recent bombings, evidencing a constant state of conflict. The global institutional and normative framework, which regulates the use of force and promotes peace, has been crucial in reducing violence and increasing international security. This system requires all states to renounce violent methods and adhere to common rules of the game, relying on the effectiveness of organizations such as the United Nations (UN).
Israel’s Violations of International Law
However, Israel, particularly the government led by Benjamin Netanyahu, appears exempt from these norms. In Syria, Lebanon, and Palestine, Israel has carried out actions that violate international law and signed agreements. In Syria, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have conducted aerial and ground incursions, taking advantage of the weakness of the government of Ahmed al-Sharaa to expand its territorial control. These actions include the illegal occupation of territories and the violation of international agreements, such as those related to the Golan Heights.
In Lebanon, despite the fact that Hezbollah has not carried out attacks against Israel since the ceasefire, the IDF continues to carry out daily attacks against Lebanese targets. These actions are justified under the pretext of responding to non-existent attacks or attempts to rearm Hezbollah. Additionally, Israel maintains its presence in five Lebanese localities, in violation of the ceasefire agreements.
The Situation in Palestine
In Palestine, the situation is even more critical. In the West Bank, a combination of military forces and armed settlers carry out daily violent incursions into Palestinian localities, destroying lives and property. In Gaza, Israel has repeatedly failed to uphold the ceasefire agreement reached in October 2024, using similar arguments to those employed in Lebanon.
Israel’s Impunity
Israel’s impunity is largely due to its military superiority, both conventional and nuclear, compared to other countries in the region. Additionally, it enjoys the backing of Washington, which uses its veto in the UN Security Council to protect Israel, provides economic and military support, and finances defense research projects. This backing, combined with the complicity of much of the international community, allows Israel to act with impunity.
The International Community’s Response
The international community’s passivity in the face of these violations is alarming. Despite the fact that Israel’s actions are carried out in broad daylight and cannot be justified by ignorance, the international community has not taken effective measures to compel Israel to adhere to international norms. There are means of response, both diplomatic, economic, and military, but what is lacking is the political will to implement them.
Consequences of Inaction
The situation in Syria, Lebanon, and Palestine not only puts the lives of Palestinians, Syrians, and Lebanese at risk, but also the established international order after World War II. This order, based on common rules and norms, has been fundamental to maintaining global peace and security. If the international community does not act, it risks collapsing, which would have devastating consequences for global stability.
