The study of well-being as an indicator of alert for public policies faces deaths by despair in the US, evidencing a significant relationship between despair and increased mortality in new racial and age cohorts. A methodological approach based on subjective well-being trends allows identifying vulnerable populations, while econometric analysis reveals a double causality relationship between mental health and deaths by suicide, drugs and alcohol, highlighting the importance of early interventions in vulnerable places.
